The 1913 poster for Marcel Fabre's Italian serial adaptation, drawn by Albert Robida — the French illustrator and futurist satirist who wrote the source novel four decades earlier. An author illustrating the advertisement for the film of his own fiction is nearly unique in this period. Robida's proto-science-fiction imagery, already a generation old by 1913, was here handed to the medium that would finally be able to stage it. The density — Robida crams incident into every quadrant, an engraver's instinct at a scale meant to be read from across a street. A nineteenth-century imagination catching up with the twentieth-century machine.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
