Mihály Bíró's 1925 Austrian poster for the Vienna release of Sergei Eisenstein's Strike, his first feature. Red Vienna imported Soviet cinema as a matter of political programme, and it handed the advertising to the exiled Hungarian who had drawn the labour movement's own imagery. Poster and film come out of the same argument, made by different hands in different countries. The mass rendered as a single dark shape rather than as individuals — the same compositional instinct Eisenstein was working out in the cutting room. Two revolutions in visual form, briefly agreeing on a wall in Vienna.
