Stubbs sits his own white hunter in profile, dressed as plainly as any sitter he ever painted. He had spent eighteen months alone with a dissecting table and a decaying horse carcass to write The Anatomy of the Horse; painting himself mounted and unadorned is the same discipline turned on its author. The rider's hands are held as quiet and correct on the rein as any groom's in his stable portraits — Stubbs judged himself by his own standard. The anatomist does not spare his own likeness.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
