The Macdonald brothers painted as children in the 1740s, golf clubs in hand. The oldest golfing portrait we hold, and the first evidence on this wall that the game was something a Scottish family taught its sons. They are dressed as miniature adults, because that is how children were painted — but the clubs are real and sized for them. The handicap starts younger than anyone admits.
