Harry Vardon photographed at the height of his powers for Golf Illustrated — six Open Championships, and the overlapping grip that carries his name. No player has ever left a deeper physical mark on the game: hold a club today and your hands are quoting him. The stillness. Vardon’s contemporaries all remarked on how little he appeared to do. The best technique looks like nothing much at all.
