Captain William Innes in scarlet, club shouldered, his caddie behind with the clubs and the bottle. The founding portrait of the clubhouse wall: the golfer as gentleman-officer, the game as society. The caddie carries the clubs loose under his arm — the bag hasn’t been invented. The uniform came before the swing.
