A 1918 episode poster for the Universal serial The Brass Bullet, issued for the thirteenth of its eighteen chapters. Serial advertising was the most disposable printing the industry produced - a fresh sheet every week, discarded the moment the next chapter opened. Survival rates are correspondingly poor, and the serial itself is lost. The near-square proportion, unusual among surviving film paper and a reminder that serial formats were never as standardised as feature sheets. A week's suspense, printed to be thrown away.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
