A 1928 half-sheet, the horizontal 22-by-28-inch format displayed in theatre lobbies, for the Universal production directed by Paul Leni. Adapted from Hugo, made at Universal with a German director and German-trained craft, it is the clearest bridge between Weimar expressionism and the American horror film. Its central image has had an afterlife far beyond the picture itself. The horizontal format forces the composition sideways — the artist has to build drama across the width rather than down a one-sheet's height. Grief wearing a grin it cannot take off.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
