The British release poster for The Manxman (1929), produced by British International Pictures at Elstree — Alfred Hitchcock's final wholly silent film. Hitchcock finished this and went straight into Blackmail, which became Britain's first talkie. The Manxman sits exactly on the hinge; within months the entire grammar this poster advertises was obsolete. The layout still assumes a silent audience — faces and situation, no reference anywhere to sound, which every poster a year later would shout about. The end of one language, advertised as though it would last.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
