A Victorian table after dinner: an overturned cut-crystal glass, a garnet stain into the runner, cracked walnut shells, a gold watch on its chain, a guttered candle. Painted in the warm amber of a gaslit dining room, when a spill was a small scandal and a large pleasure. The watch is still going. The evening is not. Every good dinner ends a little late and a little stained.
