A tenebrist ledge: a silver cup on its side, dark wine crawling toward you out of near-total blackness, a cluster of black grapes, a knife. Painted the way Caravaggio lit a room — a single shaft, everything else surrendered to shadow. The only bright things in the picture are the wine and the edge of the blade. Some spills you only see because of the dark around them.
