A 1917 poster for the American feature, held by the Library of Congress. By 1917 the industry had a fixed lexicon for adult melodrama - webs, souls, desire, sin - and the posters recycled it relentlessly, because it reliably sold tickets while promising nothing a censor could name. This sheet is a clean example of that commercial euphemism at work. How the title carries all the suggestion, leaving the illustration free to stay respectable. Everything implied, nothing stated.
