A Swedish placard of 1920 for Thora van Deken, designed by Gunnar Widholm and catalogued by the Swedish Film Database. Swedish cinema of this moment was building the moral chamber-drama that Germany would shortly borrow and darken. These are the films Berlin studied, and their advertising is correspondingly restrained where German sheets were becoming loud. Set this beside the German placards of the same year: the Swedish poster trusts stillness to carry the weight. A crime committed out of love, advertised without raising its voice.
