See pieces like it you can buyThe 1911 Danish poster for Ved Fængslets Port, issued by Nordisk Films Kompagni of Valby. Nordisk was for a few years the largest film company in Europe outside France, and Denmark's social melodramas set the template — the fallen woman, the gambling den, the moral abyss dressed in evening clothes — that Germany and Russia both borrowed. The scene is printed as a photographic still inside a typographic frame; Danish sheets of this date sell the film as reportage, not as painting. A small country's brief command of the world's screens, on cheap paper.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
