A very large French affiche for Jean Kemm's serial Vidocq, published around 1922–23 and held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Eugène-François Vidocq — convict turned founder of the Sûreté — was the original model for the detective in European fiction, and the French serial industry returned to him again and again. This sheet belongs to the post-Feuillade wave of ciné-romans, when the serial was still the dominant form of French popular cinema. Scanned at over seven thousand pixels tall: at full resolution the lithographic grain and the weave of the linen backing are both plainly readable. The criminal who wrote the rulebook, sold back to the public as entertainment.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
