Barent Avercamp’s ice scene, painted in the manner and the business his uncle Hendrick established. Two Avercamps hanging together tells the truth about how Dutch painting worked: a subject was a family concern, not a signature. The formula is inherited — the same low sky, the same scattered crowd — and it still works. Some things are worth repeating for a generation.
