A kolf player at rest, etched by Rembrandt in 1654 — the game’s ancestor, drawn by the century’s greatest etcher. This is the single most distinguished maker in the house. Rembrandt turned to the game the way he turned to everything: as an excuse to look at a person. He is not mid-swing. He is waiting, leaning, mid-conversation — the etching is about the pause, not the shot. Most of any round is standing about. Rembrandt noticed first.
