Levasseur’s 1852 department map of the Côte-d’Or — the Burgundian heartland — bordered with the decorative engravings his Atlas National de la France Illustrée gave every department: the natural beauty and trade richness of the land, framing the map itself. Before there was a wine map, there was just a map — the Côte-d’Or was drawn as a place people governed and traded in long before it was drawn as a place people tasted. This is that map. The department line runs the length of the slope without once mentioning a vineyard by name — the terroir hadn’t yet become the subject. Some maps become wine maps only in hindsight.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
