Louis Dalrymple’s 1895 chromolithograph for *Puck*, casting the political class of the day as golfers on a links. The earliest American satire in the house, and evidence that within a year of arriving the game was already a metaphor for the powerful wasting an afternoon. The caricature assumes you know every face. In 1895, everyone did. Golf became shorthand for power almost before it became a sport.
