The great amateur of the first game. Arthur Fitzgerald, Lord Kinnaird, played in nine of the first twelve Cup Finals and won five — still the record — celebrated one final by standing on his head in front of the pavilion, and went on to preside over the Football Association for thirty-three years. Vanity Fair gave him its full chromolithograph treatment: the red beard, the long white trousers he wore in every final, the bearing of a man who owned the game socially and loved it anyway. Before the professionals arrived, football’s first celebrity was a bank director who tackled like a landslide.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
