A footballer, photographed alone in 1922 on a full plate, standing the way a stage actor of the period was photographed. This is a small revolution: for fifty years the game’s image had been crowds, teams and action, and the individual player existed mainly as a name in an agate-type line-up. By the 1920s he was a subject in his own right — worth a plate, a pose, and a lighting set-up. The star system arrived in football at almost exactly the moment it arrived in cinema, and for the same reason. Someone decided a player was worth a portrait, and the game was never collective again.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
