Monticelli’s heaped table in thick, jewelled impasto — pears and an orange, a white jug, and behind them a dark wine goblet catching what little light there is. The bridge between the old still life and the Impressionists: the subject barely matters, the paint is the feast. A faithful reproduction of a public-domain painting at The Art Institute of Chicago. The goblet is built from a dozen loaded strokes — closer to jewellery than to glass. Sometimes the wine is an excuse for the colour.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
