Ohisa of the Takashimaya — the cracker-shop owner’s daughter whose face drew customers from across the city — in half-length, composed and self-possessed. She was one of the celebrated “three beauties of the Kansei era”: a shop girl made nationally famous by prints, celebrity manufactured in woodblock a century and a half before the photograph. The crest on her kimono is the shop’s as much as hers — the portrait doubles as the Takashimaya’s advertisement, and Edo read it exactly that way. To be seen once in Edo was to be seen ten thousand times.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
