Kolf players and horse-drawn sleighs outside a Dutch town under van der Neer’s winter sky. The house already hangs a small van der Neer it can only sell as a file. This is the same painter, the same subject, at a resolution that finally reaches the wall. The town is a silhouette and the sky does all the work — his whole method in one panel. The right scan turns a footnote into a centrepiece.
