Arthur James, drawn by Spy in the day dress of a man who owned the horses rather than rode them. The Edwardian turf ran as much on owners like James as on any jockey, men whose money and connections shaped which colours started, and Vanity Fair's gallery gave them exactly as much space as the riders. the ease of the stance, a man drawn standing rather than posed, the caricaturist's difference between someone who works the saddle and someone who merely pays for it. Ownership has its own kind of horsemanship.
