The young apprentice Arthur Templeman, drawn by Spy beneath a caption that already stakes its claim — 'a rising star' — ahead of the racing public catching up. Vanity Fair's captions did real work as tips as much as titles, and putting an apprentice's name to that phrase was Spy betting on a career still being written. the loose, unsettled stance Spy gives a rider who hadn't yet earned a champion's composure. A caption can be a wager on someone's future.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
