The boy jockey Frank Wootton, caught by Spy in 1909 already holding himself like a rider twice his age. Wootton was still an apprentice when this plate ran, yet was riding his way toward the top of the season's winners' list — the rare case of Vanity Fair drawing a career before it had finished announcing itself. the set jaw under a face Spy has kept deliberately young, the caricaturist's way of admitting the sitter hadn't grown into his own success yet. Some careers outrun the face that's living them.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
