Light comes through a broken pane at the left and finds everything — the crust of the bread rendered in beads of thick, dry paint, the brass, the deep lapis blue of her apron, a pigment then worth more than gold and spent here on a kitchen worker. She looks down at her work with total absorption, and the room goes quiet around her. It is the great argument of Dutch painting: that ordinary life, attended to closely enough, is the most beautiful subject there is.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
