Charles Wagstaff’s hand-coloured aquatint of 1850 after Charles Lees’ painting — a 65×94 cm sheet of the most famous match ever painted. The painting hangs in Edinburgh; this is the print that actually hung in clubhouses, and Yale’s scan of it is one of the largest in the house. The engraver is named on equal terms with the painter, because in 1850 he was — reproduction was a craft with its own reputations. The picture everyone knows is almost never the object everyone owned.
