A poster for J. Édouard Pernot's absinthe extra-supérieure — Leonetto Cappiello working the same green hour that would make him famous a few years later, in Paris. One of a run of absinthe commissions Cappiello painted between 1900 and 1914, before the bans closed the category he had helped sell. The house he was building his style in no longer exists to hire him. Cappiello's flat, saturated color fields and single dramatic figure — the vocabulary he would perfect on Maurin Quina, already forming here. The style outlived the spirit.
