English clubs had been touring the Continent since the 1890s, playing exhibition matches that taught the game as much as any coaching manual, and almost none of it was photographed properly. This is the exception: a London side at the Stade Bergeyre on the 15th of May, 1921, caught on an Agence Rol glass plate at a resolution the English press of the day could not have dreamed of. The tour match was the game’s real export mechanism — not the rulebook, the visit. Every continental club that got good got good by losing to someone like this first. Football was taught by demonstration, on tour, in the spring.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
