Before the wireless carried a result, the postcard carried the team. The picture postcard was Edwardian Britain’s fastest medium — posted at noon, delivered by teatime — and the football postcard was how a Cup win actually travelled: the winning eleven, the trophy, the halfpenny stamp. This 1913 card of the English Cup winners is the genre complete — part team photograph, part souvenir, part news bulletin, sold outside the ground and mailed across the country by the thousand. Scanned at over three thousand pixels wide, it keeps the halftone screen of the original press plate. The postman was the first football broadcaster.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
