The 26th of December, 1920, at the Stade Pershing: a Lisbon side and a Barcelona side, playing each other in Paris. Nobody involved was at home. Within twenty years of leaving Britain the game had become the first genuinely international leisure habit of the modern world, and this plate is what that looked like before anyone had a word for it — three countries in one fixture, arranged by nothing more than the fact that everyone now played the same game by the same rules. The Agence Rol photographer treated it as ordinary news, which is the remarkable part. The rules travelled faster than anything else Britain exported.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
