The 31st of December, 1922, at the Stade de Paris in Saint-Ouen: a Kraków side against a Geneva side, playing out the year in front of a French crowd. Poland had existed again for four years. Switzerland had spent the war neutral and the peace organising football. Neither had any particular reason to be in Saint-Ouen except that the fixture list had become a continent-wide thing that arranged itself, and a holiday afternoon was a holiday afternoon everywhere. The Agence Rol plate is as sharp as anything in this house. The fixture list organised Europe before the treaties did.
