The oldest photograph in this collection and the quietest. In 1908 association football in France was a thing of a few dozen clubs and a few thousand devotees, played on grounds that were fields with a rope round them; the Agence Rol sent a photographer to Bordeaux and came back with this. There is no crowd to speak of. There is a pitch, a low fence, and eleven men who have agreed to take the game seriously before anyone else did. Fifteen years later Colombes would hold sixty thousand for the same sport. Everything starts on a field with a rope round it.
