Aston Villa’s 1896–97 side did what only Preston had done before them: League and Cup in a single season — a double the English game would then wait sixty-four years to see again. The photograph is Victorian club portraiture at full plumage: both trophies displayed like altar plate, the committee men as proud as the players, everyone aware they were sitting for history.
