Before stickers, before cigarette cards: John Baines of Bradford printed boyhood itself. From the 1880s his shield-shaped chromolithograph cards — every club a coat of arms in a boy’s pocket — were traded, flicked, and treasured across the industrial north by the first generation to grow up with the game. The heraldry-shaped die cut made supporters of schoolboys; collecting is the first form of supporting. Sold here as the flight — six cards framed together — because the set is the product: no single shield carries what a wall of them does.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
