Beverley in the East Riding, season 1910–11. For every famous club there were four hundred sides like this one, and the entire structure of English football — the pyramid, the cup that any of them could theoretically win, the Saturday habit of a whole country — rested on them. They sat for the same photograph the champions sat for, in the same pose, with the same care, and their archive box survived because someone in the town thought it mattered. It did. The game is not made of its famous clubs; it is made of the four hundred that are not.
