Boxing Day, 1920. Fifty-three thousand people paid at the Goodison Park turnstiles — with an estimated ten thousand more locked outside — to watch the works team of Dick, Kerr & Co., munitions manufacturers of Preston, beat St Helens Ladies 4–0. It was the women’s game at a height it would wait decades to see again. Within a year the Football Association banned women from its members’ grounds, calling the game unsuitable; this collection tells that plainly, because the record is the point. The crowd is the evidence — nobody bans a failure. The gate receipts knew the truth first.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
