The English women’s eleven, photographed at the Stade Pershing on the 31st of October, 1920, in precisely the pose every men’s club in Europe used: back row standing, front row seated, ball placed in front. They had drawn crowds of fifty-three thousand at Goodison Park the previous Boxing Day. They were, at this moment, among the best-supported football teams in the country. Thirteen months later they would be banned from every affiliated ground in England and would play on public parks for half a century. They stood for the same photograph as everybody else, because they were footballers.
