See pieces like it you can buyThe women’s game was international before the ban ever fell. In 1920 the Dick, Kerr Ladies played a French representative side home and away — the away leg in Paris drew crowds the men’s game would have envied — and the French sporting press put the fixture on its covers. This November 1920 cover of the France–England match is the women’s international as news event: not a curiosity item, a fixture. Within thirteen months the English FA closed its grounds to these players. The magazines had already printed the truth: the game was real, the crowds were real, and both were growing.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
