The Parc des Princes, 1921. France had been playing internationals for twenty years and losing most of them, and the side in this photograph belongs to the last generation that had to build a national team out of a genuinely amateur club structure. Within a decade the country would host and organise the sport at the highest level; within two it would be professional. The Agence Rol plate is sharp enough to read the lacing on the boots. What is worth looking at is the confidence — a team that had not yet won anything, standing as though it would. Every football country has this photograph in its past.
