The 15th of March, 1925, at the Stade Buffalo, and four days later the same ground would host Uruguay. In one week Paris saw both halves of the South American game, and the French press wrote about the touch the way people write about a magic trick. Brazil would not win anything for another twenty-five years, but the style that eventually took the world was already legible on this pitch — the low centre of gravity, the ball kept close, the refusal to hurry. Europe had believed it invented football. This was the fortnight that ended the belief. Two Sundays in March, and the centre of gravity moved.
