The 31st of October, 1920, at the Stade Pershing: the English women’s side against a French representative team, in front of a Paris crowd, photographed on a full glass plate by a news agency that treated it as news. This is the fixture the house already holds as a magazine cover; here is the match itself. Thirteen months later the English Football Association would close every affiliated ground to women’s football, and the ban would stand for fifty years. Nothing in this photograph suggests a curiosity. It is a proper international, properly covered. The ban was not a response to failure. It was a response to success.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
