The 24th of April, 1927, at Colombes, and near the end of the Agence Rol’s great decade of football glass. Italy by now was a fully professional football country with a state that had noticed the sport’s usefulness, and France was about to become one. Within five years both would send full professional sides to the first European club competitions and the second World Cup. This plate is the last calm afternoon before that — an ordinary international, superbly photographed, at the closing of the amateur era. The photograph is ordinary. That it survives at 8,600 pixels is not.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
