The 13th of June, 1926, at Colombes. Yugoslavia had been assembled out of the wreckage of two empires in 1918, and one of the first things it did with its new statehood was field a football team — because by the 1920s a national side had become part of the standard equipment of being a country, like a flag or a postal service. This Agence Rol plate is a photograph of that fact. Whatever else the new Europe was going to be, it was going to play on Sundays. The century decided that nations come with an eleven.
