The French women’s eleven at the Stade Pershing, 31 October 1920. France had a serious women’s football culture in the early twenties, organised largely through the women’s sports federation that ran its own championships and sent its own international sides; the English tour of that autumn was a fixture between two established programmes, not an exhibition. When England shut its game down the following year, France carried on for another decade. Half of what survives of the women’s first golden age survives because a Paris agency photographed it. The record exists because somebody in Paris thought it was worth a plate.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
