Haarlem, 1907, beside the Jan Gijzenvaart. The Netherlands took to association football early and seriously, and by the 1900s Dutch clubs had the settled, well-organised look of institutions rather than experiments. What is striking here is how little the arrangement differs from a Yorkshire side of the same year: the same rows, the same folded arms, the same ball with the date on it. The game exported its rules, and along with them a photograph. Within twenty years these clubs would be beating England. A sport travels as a rulebook and a pose, and the pose travels just as far.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
