A Marseille side photographed at the Stade Élisabeth in 1924. Port cities produced the most fervent football in every country that took the game up, for the plain reason that ports are where it arrived: sailors, dockers, and traders played it first and hardest, and the clubs that grew out of them inherited an intensity that inland cities took decades to match. This is that club in the year of the Paris Olympics, up in the capital, sitting for the standard photograph. Football came ashore in the ports, and the ports never gave it back.
