The Netherlands lined up at the Paris Olympics in 1924 before facing Uruguay in the semi-final, and lost 2–1. The Dutch were an established, well-drilled, thoroughly European side — exactly the standard the Continent had spent twenty years building — and they were beaten by something they had no answer to. There is a particular poignancy to a team photograph taken before a defeat that turns out to be historic; everyone in it is about to become part of somebody else’s story. Half of football history is the photograph taken just before.
